Spice Jet flight bound for Srinagar makes emergency landing at Delhi airport after fire warning

A SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Srinagar was forced to make an emergency landing at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi when a technical glitch caused a fire light to come on, indicating a possible fire in the plane's aft (rear) cargo area.

The flight with about 140 people landed safely at the airport. However, no fire or smoke was later identified during the survey.

“On April 18, SpiceJet B737 aircraft operating flight SG-8373 (Delhi-Srinagar) returned to Delhi as the aft cargo fire light illuminated in the cockpit. The light later extinguished upon actions taken by the captain. Before landing, all operational parameters were observed to be normal and the aircraft landed safely and passengers were deplaned normally,” a SpiceJet spokesperson stated.

When opening the aft Cabin, no trace of fire or smoke was seen, and the alarm was determined to be false based on an initial investigation, the spokesperson added. According to an airport official, the request for a full emergency landing was received at 10:40 am by the air traffic control (ATC) tower.

SpiceJet flight makes emergency landing in Kolkata
In February this year, a SpiceJet plane en route to Bangkok made an emergency landing at the Kolkata airport when the pilot saw a broken engine blade.

The incident occurred when the Boeing 737, flying as Flight SG83, took off with 178 passengers and six crew members from Kolkata Airport to Bangkok at around 1:09 a.m. and the captain noticed a few minutes later that the left engine blade was broken.

The pilot quickly informed air traffic control and an emergency was declared at the Kolkata airport, with fire engines, ambulances and CISF emergency teams on the spot. At 1:27 a.m. the aircraft made an emergency landing and all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.
